An Introduction to the Chinese Zodiac
By Master Wu on January 31, 2008
You probably know your zodiac sun sign, but do you know your Chinese astrology sign? Were you born in the year of the Tiger, the Snake, the Horse or the Dragon? More importantly, according to this ancient oriental astrology what does your sign reveal about you?

Like western astrology, Chinese astrology is a method of prediction which has been around for centuries and which defines certain characteristics about human nature. While both systems base their information on the date of birth, the Chinese rely primarily on the year of birth.

In addition, Chinese astrology also has 12 signs. These signs are all represented by animals and each sign lasts one year. The Chinese year begins in January or February; the dates vary from year to year.

Arrival of the Animals
You may be wondering why this ancient oriental system uses animals for the signs. According to Chinese legend, thousands of years ago, Buddha decided that the Chinese nation needed reorganization so he called all the animals together for a meeting. However, only 12 animals came to the meeting. The first to arrive was the Rat, then the Ox, followed by the Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and finally the Pig.

Buddha honored the animals in the order in which they arrived by naming a year after each animal. The people who are born during a particular animal's year inherit some of that animal's nature and disposition.

Am I my Sign?
Certainly, this likeness shouldn't be taken literally. However, if you examine your own character, as well as the personality of friends and family members, you will be surprised by the similarities between people and their Chinese animal sign. Oxen tend to be extremely hard-working. Snakes usually have an innate wisdom. Dogs are known for their strong loyalty. You will find a more detailed description of all of the animals' characteristics in this special little book.

Chinese astrology provides you with a wealth of information concerning the signs which can be very advantageous to you. Look up the characteristics of your own sign. Do you have similar strengths and weaknesses as your animal? If you become aware of these basic characteristics of your nature, you will have a better of chance of making life coincide to your liking.

Being conscientious of your strengths or your more difficult side will help you to realize when you should react and when you should hold back. Just think how this knowledge will help you in your relationships, your career, your finances. Furthermore, this valuable information will come in handy when it comes to understanding others and their way of approaching life. Chinese astrology will open up a whole new world to you which will be informative, productive and definitely entertaining.

I'm curious (if not confused):
If 1956 is the year of the Monkey, but if the birthdate is January 7, then apparently the Chinese Astrological sign is a Goat. Which is it?

the year thing goes under chinese dates not julius (normal) dates. the chinese new years is in feb not jan. so the years are different by a month. go to "find your chinese sign" and since its chinese zodiac use their calendar

According to my birth year, I'm a Dog. If you go by my birth date, I'm a Rooster. I've read both profiles and while I have traits of both, I can identify more with the traits of the Dog. Which of course leads me to ask this very important question...Is there a "transition period" for those of us born Jan/Feb where we can inherit the traits of both signs? Thanks to anyone who can help.
Comment #11 by Jessica on November 08, 2009
Is there a "transition" period for those born in Jan/Feb? I only asked because according to the year I was born I should be a Dog but if I'm specific about the date of my birth, I should be a Rooster. I do see similarities in the traits of both, however, I am a lot more like the Dog than the Rooster. Hence, my first question. Thanks to anyone who replies.

Comment #18 by Doug on September 03, 2009
Jacquelin, I'm Doug. There will be rare excepts where the Tiger will do well with a Monkey. Mentally he is much better suited for his Rat. That does not at all mean they have a good relationship, by any stretch of the imagination. Your birth time will often determine who you are attracted to and who is attracted to you. There is sexual compatibility, level of peace, intimacy to consider as well. Talk to me and be more specific with the birth data of each of you. Maybe he needs to leave his Rat, I mean, wife.

Io a am a Tiger attracted to a Monkey but my Monkey is married to a Rat. I just want my monkey in my Life. Not to take him away from his Spouse.

My birthday is Nov. 5th 1980 the year of the Metal Monkey. National Gun Smoke Day. I am a Scorpio with a Scorpio Rising. I am a fixed sign but hate routine. In other words, I will keep in the same industry my whole life but switch it up and continue to learn new things and sharpen my skills. Wow cool

Comment #34 by Stephen on February 04, 2009
If you look at the order of the animals in the very beginning and read the order for the years: CAT matches up with RABBIT (between the Tiger & the Dragon). Also interchangeable are the following: GOAT w/ SHEEP; BOAR w/PIG... not sure if there are any others
Comment #35 by Stephen on February 04, 2009
CAT & RABBIT are INTERCHANGEABLE
