Decluttering Your Home Using Feng Shui Techniques
By Maria Palma on January 21, 2008
Most of us look at cleaning our home as a chore, but revitalizing and organizing your life should be a joyous activity. When there is harmony in the home, all feelings and emotions within the space is harmonious.

Good and Bad Chi

The Chinese view their lives as having chi energy, which is a "cosmic breath". There is yang energy, or good energy, as well as yin energy which is negative energy. Tired energy is clutter whether it be physical, emotional, or spiritual clutter. Dealing with the physical clutter first can make way for a better emotional and spiritual life. By decluttering your home, you push away bad energy and make space for new energy to enter. Bad energy can be created simply by dead insects, old newspapers and magazines, and junk accumulated over time.

Keep the Chi Going

You can tune into the energy of a room by walking clockwise around and close to the walls. One room to pay close attention to is the bedroom. When chi energy in the bedroom is unwelcoming, this may cause problems between couples. Keep all dirty clothes in a laundry basket. Don't place junk under, over, or beside a bed. Keep windows clear of clutter. Open the windows and let light and fresh air in. Morning sunlight is the best yang energy!

Keep energy flowing smoothly throughout the home. Watch and observe which rooms in the house everybody tends to gravitate to. Work on those rooms that seem to be lonely. Colors, music, children, lights, water, and sound contain strong energy which every room should have. Try painting a room and see how it affects your physical energy! Plants symbolize life and also bring color to a room.

Watch the Negative Energy!

Take extra care with corners where negative energy, cobwebs, and dirt tend to gravitate to. The corner diagonal to the door of a room should be full of good chi. Do not use it for storage and keep it clutter-free.

Blocked energy vibrations have a negative effect on our mental well-being. The foyer, hall, and staircase are the most susceptible places of being blocked. When your foyer is clear, it helps good chi enter the home freely. Corridors and hallways move energy from room to room. Staircases should always be clutter free - not only for safety reasons, but the flow of chi is smooth up and down to the living spaces.

When you feel like you need more space to breathe, it is most likely due to the images in your home disturbing your subconscious mind. Art can be beautiful and a joy to look at, but over time can be distracting and stagnant. Changing the surroundings from time to time is the best way to make you feel better.

Clear Clutter and Stay Neat!

It is important to clear table tops on a regular basis. When we come home we tend to throw our keys, mail, purse, etc. onto the closest table top and things accumulate quickly! Choose decorative objects to place on tabletops and display full bowls of pots as they attract abundant chi.

A well kept and clean kitchen keeps yin energy away. Clean the refrigerator at least once a month. Check out all the cookware and throw away broken plates, cups, and bowls. Make sure the garbage is cleaned out regularly. Out of all the rooms in the home, this one is the most vulnerable to yin energy.

It takes some time to get into the habit of decluttering on a regular basis. Realize that if you do not do it, it could be detrimental to your mental, physical, and emotional well being. It's easy to do it if you're single living alone. If you have a family, be sensitive to other family members belongings. Have a discussion on the importance of having positive energy in the home and let them know where things should be.

Once you take the step to create positive energy in your home, you'll see your life change for the better!

I have a very small bedroom as you enter you see a window 6 ft wide and about 3ft long. If I place the bed under the window which is nice but the feet of the bed face the entrance. Now I have it kiddy corner to the right to avoid feet facing the door entrance...& I can not have two nightstand for I can only fit one side. The other side is right by the closet. Any suggestions? imagine a 10X10. entrance faces window; left side has bathroom entry and right side has closet. No much place to move bed around and still make it the focal point. CAN YOU HELP!

I think yall have really out-done the pot issue. Yet, if you really want to take it to heart, go to Cali., buy some of the diffent colors of "pot" certainly, they have green, and put it in your bowls. If, anyone questions, just say, it's for good home chi! This has been really fun reading your commits.

I have a problem with mail and magazines (health, medical, business start ups, financial, etc. Can't seem to throw them away, but for peace of mind, after reading the positive comments, I know it's time to get rid of the clutter. I need the change. Thanks.

Comment #20 by Jeanne on July 31, 2009
This is Jeanne and I wrote the previous comment on 7-31-09. I am the "me" in that comment.

A quick repair of the typo -of- and replacing it with -or- would have eliminated all the useless comments I just read about the obvious typo. You allowed the problem to go on despite the emails. That is very poor practice. While the clear cutter info is top notch, you see what occupied commentors' attention- the typo! 14 out of 28. Comment #8 in March 09 answers the typo. What does that say about human nature? Looking for errors that mean " I caught you" is a human tendency. Also, Evelyn was able to search on line and find the corrected article. I know I would not be computer aware enough to do a search. I thank Evelyn for putting that site address in her comment. Notice there are no more references once commentors saw her email. I must say that comment #36, 16, and 9 made me chuckle. I am out the door to find plastic red and green grapes to fill a bowl to attract abundance. I promise to keep dust away from the grapes. I am working on decluttering and organizing my condo. Kudos on such useful info to Maria Palma.
Comment #22 by Debora on July 16, 2009
i know if you place artifical green and red grapes in a bowl it attracts abundance.

Is there a way to use feng shui to move an unwanted person out of the house?
Comment #24 by natalie on July 06, 2009
By me Natalie,

Using the five elements works even if you have to use objects of simulation. Candles work better for me. I love having the water fall and utilize the direction chart alot.

I am currently using some small feug shui techniques; that allow me to live bill free. It doesn't matter how long it last. What matter's is the peace and low stress count that I am experiencing now; which will allow me to concentrate on a better life.

Believe it or not; I followed a personal feng shui gua that was sent to me and decorated my home at that time with some of the items and coloration; in less than two months I moved into an even larger home with more space and no money down. I couldn't believe it myself.

why don't you answerd every question, too many with no reply

I am in the process of de-cluttering my apt. even as I read....however in a small apt. with several people living in it it is very hard to do so and keep it that way when they will not cooperate. I am disabled and just not able to do what I was accustomed to. I have found in the past it is much easier to keep clutter away if when you use something always put it back in the same place. Plus you will always be able to find it. :)

Comment #31 by Camille on March 05, 2009
Hmm, The comments are more entertaining than the article...
Comment #32 by Genny on February 23, 2009
I believe they meant "full bowls OR pots".
Such as a bowl full of fruit or a potted plant. I believe the typo was the word "of" and should have been "or."
Thanks for the tips!

which would be good for anyone's chi.

I have been reading these fung shui articles for weeks now. And not once have I seen an answer to anyones question!!! Why? Does this site even look at our comments? I'm beginning to feel like this site is geared toward getting people in here without caring about the people themselves. Just my observation!!!
Comment #41 by wanda on December 20, 2008
I think the "full bowls or pots" mean like:

A bowl full of fruit or pots with plants/flowers.

That seems to make more sense.
Comment #42 by Lucila on December 16, 2008
I take it she means a full bowl of flower pots, or a flower in a bowl instead of just the plain old plastic container they usually come in.
Comment #43 by Barbara on December 14, 2008
You can learn more if you just google information on feng shui. There many books also you need to find a feng shui compass, just placing things does not always work. De-cluttering is good for the mind and soul. Clutter causes confusion and clutters the mind. Simplify....
Comment #44 by Greta on December 14, 2008
I have just found out that I have lost my job after 23 years and I am going to de-clutter, after having an addiction to auctions and estate sales!!!

i think "full bowls of pots" must mean "full bowls OR pots" - although i still don't understand what they are supposed to be full of (or maybe that doesnt matter).
this was very useful information!
Comment #49 by Jimmy on November 25, 2008
very good indeed. I know that by cluttering your home brings bad luck and bad influences. I once in a blue moon take time to do this but, I'm very obese and have lots of complications and can't perform to much. I have to di-clutter before it's too late. Thanks for reminding me.

Under the Heading of "Clear Clutter and stay Neat" Totally baffled me, the third sentence did. "Choose decorative objects to place on tabletops and display full bowls of pots as they attract abundant chi." What did you mean to say?
