Feng Shui In Little Ways
By Brandy Stoner on January 21, 2008
It all started three years ago when my sister gave me a book on decorating using the Eastern principle of feng shui (pronounced fung shway). Now I keep my toilet lid down and the bathroom door closed to keep the negative energy from the sewage from entering my home. I am convinced that not facing a water source, and the energy shooting off the sharp corners of the office buildings in front of my home that year, contributed to the downfall of my marriage.

Now, some people think that makes me a little kooky, but feng shui, at its core, is about creating balance in one's environment. Many corporations, government offices, and individuals consult with feng shui experts, not just in Eastern culture, but also in the United States. The same principals used in their offices can be incorporated into your writing space. Perhaps it is time for you to rethink your writing environment.

The feng shui office contains items that represent five essential elements: water, wood, metal, fire, and earth. There are simple ways to incorporate each of these elements into your work environment.

Water
Include a small fountain, or a rain sounds CD. Keep this in mind, as well glass can be used to symbolize water. Although glass may seem solid, it is actually fluid on a microscopic level. Glass is also the element that balances out fire, so a glass candleholder is a perfect addition to your space. You can also incorporate blues and greens to represent the colors of water, in order to bring about the needed balance between fire and water.

Wood
It is usually rather easy to bring wood into an office. Furniture is naturally made of wood, and there will, by necessity, be several wooden pieces in the area where you write, such as the desk, tables, and chairs. If you have a more modern office space, with a lot of glass, and metal or plastic filing equipment, then you can bring in picture frames, a bonsai, or a pressed paper lampshade. It is important to include plants in your home office, as they symbolize growth.

Metal
Picture frames can also be used to introduce metal into the areas where you write. Include candle holders, or use sterling silver baby cups to hold your paperclips, instead of something more plastic and less inspiring.

Fire
As an author, the items you use to represent fire are extremely important. Fire elements affect your fame and reputation. Bring candles into your space as a quick way to add fire to your writing. Pay special attention to the look and quality of your lighting, and bring in natural light, or mirrors to reflect the light (and balance the fire element, since glass functions in that way).

Earth
Bring in plants and stones to represent earth. A clay pot covered in moss can hold your pencils. Stones in a fountain, dish, even used as paperweights, add an element of earthiness to your environment. Hold them, touch them, roll them in your palms, and note how much more relaxed and grounded you feel.

The strategic use of color is important in feng shui design, as well. Use yellow to encourage a bright start for your bright future. Blues and greens represent health and family, and are especially helpful on the main wall of a room.

Including such things as stones, plants, bark, and other items from nature in your room adds to the serenity and balance. Movement created by a breeze or fan opens up the flow of energy in the room. Include some dragonflies for luck -- my pens are in a clay pot the color of stone, square to represent the earth element, with dragonfly impressions in the clay. The green moss along its edge makes it flow seamlessly with the large photo of a crumbling stone abbey that rests on the shelf behind it. The repeated pattern of its rounded arches is calming.

Rounded corners, even on square items, are important in a feng shui room. Energy travels in planes, and the effect of energy shooting off a corner can make you feel attacked or trapped. It?s a sentence for writer?s block.

Whichever items you choose, group them in threes if possible. This is a feng shui design principle, as well as a mainstream design principle. A loose triangle is the best arrangement. Try not to group different items that are all the same shape on surfaces. Wall art in triptychs is also encouraged.

Starting with the toilet...
I am a feng shui enthusiast, not an expert, and its principles and applications are far more complicated, as certain elements balance others and enhance each other, and certain colors and shapes represent different elements. It?s almost a science in itself. Once you have taken steps to enhance your writing space, and therefore your writing, with Feng Shui, you might want to research it more and keep going on the rest of your house. Starting with the toilet...

I think Feng Shui is something logic, not supersticious. I.e: we are not allowed to put the stair in front of the Entrance door. This is LOGIC, because if people want to go to SEcond floor, will be difficult and also mostly Guest room is in front too, so the Guest can see we walk upstair that is not good expecially if our wives or girls wear some rocks....
can see the underwear....alamak !!

By your house facing a water source-- does that include the water main? Other than that there is a natural spring creek that runs through our front yard but most of the time the water is just standing still, and in the summertime that means mosquitoes.

I need to know what to do because I recently move into a smaller house and there does not seem to be a correct space for everything to fit into. I was trying to save some shoe boxes to recycle but I had to throw them out today to make some space for me to move around in my room. What advice can you give?

I just want to say .. I love this site its awesome I started a lil at a time.. with keeping the toilet seat down and the bathroom door closed to keep out negative energies and yellow flowers in the entry way and things have changed in my household my boyfriend and I seem to be more attentative to each other but of course he has no clue that I'm adding feng shui to our home.. otherwise he would think I'm coming apart at the seams.. lol..I feel alot calmer and able to deal with things out of order.. I'm changing my guest room to a home.. office any suggestions.. ??? (oh btw we don't own this place we rent) Peachy in FL
Comment #36 by Valerie on May 01, 2009
When you enter my home the first thing that greets you is a full wall to wall mirror. Plus, to the right when you also enter is another small wall mirror. I just found out that you should never have mirrors facing the doors. What should I do? These mirrors are professionally installed.

I rent a very small apt. in which the landlord will not let me paint or do anything major to it. How do I apply this technique when he limits what I can do? I have never been on this site before and I just moved my furniture around yesterday in the living area...it's odd how I managed to do this the fung shui way after reading some of the articles.

A wonderful site!!! I will share.
Comment #43 by lois on February 19, 2009
Nicely done Linda (#7 comment)! Your point is well taken, however, one only needs to know that this is an ancient science of space and matter. It works, or undoubedtly it would not have lasted and continued for centuries, it would have fallen by the wayside. We tend to think that if the canons of science can't be applied to a methodology then it has no credibility. This is academia from the ancient ones! It works, no question about it.............I know from my own use of it!

There's something terribly sensible about FengShui. Keeps us in alignment with nature in many ways. But I rent this apartment, best I could do, it's small and much as I'd like to follow up on all the suggestions--I can't, not on many or even most of them.

Be almost a relief to discover that my locked writer's block could be repaired with Feng shui suggestions. But I can;'t follow them up, and so . . .

I have websites that I'm getting tired of advertising. It seems no matter the more I learn and write and do. I'm getting no where. How can I attract people to actually sign up? It's actually a good commitment, otherwise I wouldn't do it.

I live in a log cabin,in the mountains we have a meadow and river across the highway in our front yard. We enter the house through the back entrance, that's our main entrance. When we enter the home everyone must walk through the kitchen to get to the main living area of the home and the bedrooms are upstairs. We are selling our property it's been on the market for over 3 years and we haven't received any offers, what should we do to attract a buyer?

In the "Complete Idiot's Guide to Feng Shui" on page15 it says "Feng Shui is not a superstition, philosophy, or religion. Feng Shui is the study of time and space. The practice seeks to harmonize nature's forces within your living/working space and surrounding environment.Feng Shui can potentially improve your healthe, wealth, and relationships. On page 9 ti states that Albert Einstein proved that matter is an illusion, a masked form of energy. In other words, we and our living space., are actually bundles of intertwining, connecting energy. All in flux, all confluent, pervading our being. If not properly or effectively harnessed, human possibility is wasted. Doesn't it make sense to enhance our environment positively and productively. Somewhere else in the book it states the solid objects are simply "energy resting" . On page 27 it talks about the Fibonacci numbers and points out that four of Feng Shui's fundamental principles correspond to the numbers in the Fibonacci sequence. In nature on pinecones, artichokes, pineapples, and sunflowers the bracts, petals, scales, and seeds respectively exemplify Fibonacci ratios. There are 5 steep and 8 gradual spirals on pinecones and artichokes. On page 76 Fritjog Capra in his book, The Tao of Physics , speaks of Werner Heisenberg's S-Matrix theory which describes the realm of hadrons ( a class of subatomic particles ) as a network of inseparable reactions. Like the principle of the 8 trigrams, Heisenberg's S-Matrix theory explains all possible reactions relating to hadrons. note, the 8 trigrams are symbols representing transitional phases of all possible natural and human situations. Elsewhere in the Idiots Guide to Feng Shui it states the that the 8 trigrams corresponds to binary math, the basis of computer language. Thus Feng Shui is dealing with mathematical possibilities found in science, not mere superstition or ideas put together randomly.

Comment to Amy, Wealth is what is left after the money has come and gone. The only way to retain water (money)from flowing out too quickly is the use of a wood element. Adding a poster, picture, etc of a forest, woods, etc. to the wealth area of your home would help this. A great website for more on this and other topics is fengshuiforus.com. There is a Life areas test that helps assess what areas of your life you need to work on with the help of feng shui, a great bagua with easy to understand information, and online Journeys of Life free online class to do at your own pace. It is really great - learned a lot. check it out. Dot

I just opened my expansion by leasing a warehouse, I have been applying Feng Shui techniques. And I feel more comfortable everyday. I like the flow of the place and the business is growing will. I wish to attract good employees, they were not coming, so we wrote on our message board " we have great people" and boom the phone started ringing. I believe adding my wish or needs to the flow make them happen.
Maria, buy a book on Feng shui that will tell you more. You don't have to alter the structure of where you live (eg take down walls, etc). There are many Feng Shui techniques that you can do - and any Feng Shui book will help. Hope this helps!
