I recently lost my cat, Lobo, to cancer a few months after he had been given the diagnosis. Since Lobo was 14, we decided not to put him through chemotherapy, but to help him stay comfortable for as long as he was with us.
I’ve had other cat companions over the years, but this one was so very special. I realize that I’m not the only one who has fallen in love with my pets, only to watch them in to the inevitable cycle of life and death.
On the night that he was obviously losing his fight to keep on going, I wrapped him in a soft blanket, held him in my arms, and told him it was okay to let go of his physical body. I told him there would be many other cats to greet him and play with him once he transitioned to the spirit realms.
Now I catch glimpses of him out of the corner of my eye, and can swear that he is brushing up against my leg to let me know he is there and doing alright. Very comforting, indeed!
Coincidently, Eckhart Tolle, a world-renowned spiritual teacher, has just written about the meaningfulness that our companion animals bring to our lives. He says that they reflect back to us the fact that we are all a spark of the Divine, of God.
He suggests that we take the time to look deeply into the eyes of our dog or cat companion and sense the innermost being of their core essence.
If we take the time to sit with our cherished animal friends, perhaps petting them or listening to a cat’s purr, we create the potential to go inside to our own inner stillness which can be an entryway to higher states of Being.
I invite you to share some moments of stillness and simply being with your pets today. You may find that the anxieties and worries of the day simply melt into nothingness, at least for those few moments. And remember to thank them for their faithfulness in reminding us of our connection to God/Source. That’s their job, after all!
Peace and blessings,
Rev. Louise |
