Healthy Tips to Make Your Diet a Success!
Healthy Tips to Make Your Diet a Success!

We often hear that you need to eat fewer calories than you use to lose.  Well, that’s true, but also not true.  If you eat too little, your body won’t have enough calories to burn the fat and also will go into starvation mode, thus conserving energy by slowing down your metabolism.  The higher your metabolism rate, the faster you burn calories – the slower, the less you burn.  So eating less is not always the answer.

Actually, you can eat more and lose more!  Protein causes the body to burn more calories than other foods.  That’s why the Atkins Diet (high protein, low carb) works so well, but it is really not the healthiest way to go.  So increase the protein, but not by substituting it for carbs and veggies because you need them for fiber, vitamins and minerals.

I would be remiss if I didn’t say that you need the veggies not only for nutrition, but to keep your body’s pH level where it should be.  Too much animal protein, including dairy, can cause too much acidity, but a good balance of greens can prevent this.  My belief is you can never eat too many non-starchy veggies when on a diet – or even when you’re not!  And don’t fall into the trap of eliminating all fats and oils.  These are needed for your body to burn calories too.  Just limit the amount you consume.

But let’s say eating too little is not your problem.  You eat small healthy meals, you’re not hungry between meals or have cravings but have reached a point in your diet where you are hardly losing anymore or not at all.  In this case, you can expend more energy to use up those calories.  Running on the treadmill will do the trick, but it’s a temporary fix.  The real trick is to build more muscle mass because the more you have, the more your metabolism will increase.  When this occurs, you may even be able to eat more fats/oils and still lose.  This happened to me.  I’m not suggesting that you turn into a bodybuilder, just maybe 2-3 days a week moderate workout at home with some weights and a DVD for inspiration.  Running or walking will still use up calories, but increased muscle will do the work for you permanently.

Let’s face it, all diets work as long as you stick to them.  However, from my personal experience, no matter what the diet, if it includes sugar products, I don’t lose. (Starchy vegetables and processed grains when digested turn into sugar.) In my next blog, I will talk about different diets.  As we are considering diet tips, feel free to share your experiences.

Hi! live in England, although I have a sister who has lived in USA for forty years, and I do believe we eat more fresh fruit and veg than Americans, to eat out on burgers, fried chicken ,kebabs etc., is much less than years ago, having said, I did enjoy my food when visiting my sister it made a change, I remember one time, I had a very healthy first course and I went off to get my dessert fresh fruit salad lovely, then I spied a Lime and Lemon kind of mousse, then cubes of Jello, did I feel sick, but it was great whilst eating, My Tip find some flat mushrooms and rap around the mushrooms, place on the tray tomatoes sliced in half. make a fresh salad whilst the mushrooms etc., are cooking make a dressing equal amounts of vinegar and virgin olive oil, if you like it creamier add table spoon mayonaise and whisk hard, pour over salad some baby potatoes with a small nugget of butter. Jill. England.

Your commentary is interesting, but as a certified clinical nutritionist, there is more bio chemical reasons for the inability to lose weight; even if we think we are following the right approach. I would be happy to share those insights with you.

Anne, I just wanted to say congratulations to your stopping smoking. It is a hard habit to break (I've been there) and trying to quit smoking and to lose weight at the same is is insane so good for you for choosing priorities. I definitely feel that establishing healthy eating habits is more important than dieting. It helps to be realistic about our lifestyle in terms of the food we eat and the regular exercise we get and the kinds of food we like to eat. Some of us will never be pencil thin--nor do all of us want to--but we can all achieve a stable weight that makes us feel good about ourselves and that works for us. I am in my late 40s and it has taken me many years to find that out. I love the idea of eating healthily and finding a community of like-minded people.

I have a lot of weight to lose and am working on the theory that I will have to take multiple steps to achieve success. I had managed to get myself down about 20 lbs and then lost the initiative and gained it all back. But I had still been smoking and saying I would give it up when I lost some weight and I had to stop that and just quit and sideline my weight concerns for a while. But I have been smoke free for seven months now and feel able to start addressing the weight concerns again. Now that I am a non smoker I feel I can more seriously attack the idea of healthy living. So I started taking Tai Chi and starting my day with some stretching and walking more. I know I will need to ramp it up in the future but feel that just getting started right now is the way to go. I know how to eat healthy but just doing it is what I need to practice. I also do weight watchers on line and hope to make progress over the next few years. We don't like to think about weight loss in terms of years; but for me I think accepting that there are no quick cures is the way to go. Good luck to everyone.
Anne
