The Banana: Second to None! If you ask me, there is no such thing as “a bottom banana.” Every one is a “top banana” in my book. Not only do bananas taste great, they are loaded with vitamins and minerals that make them my first choice for a snack whenever they are in season.
What Are the Good Nutrients In Bananas? Bananas contain folate, vitamin C, B6, and are exceptionally rich in potassium. Bananas also contain pectin, which is helpful in lowering cholesterol.
Fruit of the Wise Men Alexander the Great had seen the great sages of India eating the fruit, and from this the Latin name for the banana, Musa sapientum, was derived, meaning “fruit of the wise men.”
Elvis’s favorite Elvis Presley’s favorite snack, lovingly prepared by his mother, was a sandwich of sliced bananas and peanut butter.
Plantains For those of you who have never tried plantains, you’re in for a real treat. They look very similar to bananas, but are slightly bigger and have a tougher consistency. Their nutty flavor has made them a staple in tropical countries. Besides their many healthful properties, plantains are easy to cook and tasty to eat. Who could ask for anything more?
What’s the Difference Between a Plantain and a Banana? Would you believe that there are over 500 kinds of edible bananas in the world? Bananas, plantains and red bananas are those most commonly found in the supermarket. The banana is a bright yellow when ripe and grows in tropical regions. The plantain is like a big, ugly banana, not quite as sweet, and contains a higher content of vitamin A.
Many stores are now selling small, half-size bananas called “red bananas.” These make perfect lunchbox fillers and snacks because they are bite-sized.
