Berries and Cherries

For Miracles, You can't Beat Cherries and Berries
I cannot contain my excitement in sharing the many natural miracles these little fruits perform.  I simply don’t understand how they are so under the radar of popular health news.  But not anymore for you—read on.

Summer Sensations
I always look forward to summer because I can eat my fill of all the delicious berries and cherries that are in season.  Mixed in a fruit salad, sprinkled with sugar, baked in a pie... there are so many ways to enjoy these treats that it hardly seems right that people in colder climates can’t enjoy them fresh all year round!

Only the fresh ones contain many of the essential nutrients.  You can get frozen fresh berries any time of year, although the variety is not as great and the strawberries and raspberries can become mushy when thawed.  When you do buy them fresh, seek out organically grown berries, as pesticide residue is greater in berries than any other fruit, which I suspect is the case with commercially frozen fruits, unless you buy an organic brand.  Many berries also come dried.

Luscious Berries!
One thing all berries have in common is their ability to act as a tonic for the heart and blood.  The antioxidant vitamin C in berries and cherries can also help prevent cancer.  Blueberries, cherries, and raspberries also contain anthocyanosides—a natural anti-inflammatory pain reducer.  Those found in cherries, especially tart cherries, bring much relief to osteoarthritis and gout suffers.

Anthocyanosides (that you may see on blueberry capsule bottle labels as anthocyanins—which are anthocyanosides without sugars attached) are the versatile pigments found in red/purplish fruits and vegetables that are the antioxidants for the plants. Antioxidants are substances that reduce the oxidation that causes much damage – and thus inflammation—to our cells everyday. Because our bodies can’t produce them, we get them from the foods we eat.

Blueberries Kill viruses and bacteria
A handful of fresh blueberries on your cereal every morning helps boost your ability to fight off colds and infections.  Blueberries have amazing curative properties for any disease caused by viruses or bacteria. The antiviral properties of blueberries were discovered when researchers in Canada found that blueberries killed nearly 100% of Polio viruses in 24 hours.  They proved as effective against the virus even when they were diluted 10 times!

Strawberries - What’s Good in Strawberries
The California Strawberry Commission says that strawberries contain vitamin C, folate and fiber and that the phytonutrients in strawberries—including ellagitannins and quercetin—may have considerable preventative effects on cardiovascular disease, cancer and cognitive decline.

Cherries
Tart cherries are a rich source of powerful antioxidants, including kaempferol, quercetin and melatonin. Melatonin is a powerful antioxidant considered more potent that vitamins C, E, and A, because it is soluble both in fat and water.

Cranberries
Cranberries are an invaluable source of Vitamin C, the minerals calcium, copper, phosphorus, magnesium and iron, which enrich and purify the blood, as well as fiber. Cranberry also contains the bioflavonoids quercetin, myrecetin and kaenferol, which are vital for protecting blood vessels from damage and lessening the likelihood of disease.

These berries are very astringent, having a high acid content and little natural sugar.  This astringency is what makes them such a terrific bacteria fighter.  Because of their high acidic content, it would be best to eat them or drink the juice with or after a meal.

Cranberries also are rich in pectin, a type of fiber found in fruit that is said to lower cholesterol levels and high blood pressure.  They contain antioxidants and anthocyanidins that I have talked about in all berries. These along with the Vitamins C and A help keep your skin firm and improve its elasticity, thus combating the effects of aging.

Currants are Antidiarrheal
Currants are as effective as dried blueberries in treating diarrhea.  In Sweden, where both remedies are used, crushed black currants have been formulated into a medication called Pecarin.

Many berries
There are many uncommon types of berries beneficial for many different types of ailments.  Hawthorn berries are an excellent heart remedy, particularly for angina.  Saw palmetto berries are good for preventing prostate problems and impotence.  Raspberries contain ellagic acid, a popular alternative remedy substance that can interfere with the cancer process and keep it from progressing.
