Important - Bleach and ammonia don’t mix!
If you decide to mix your own cleaning solutions with baking soda, remember not to mix ammonia and bleach together. This combination gives off toxic chlorine gas which can make you ill.
In the Garden Baking soda is a garden gift. It can balance the soil and act as a pesticide. It can even keep the bunnies from nibbling. Sprinkle a little (a pinch for small, potted plants, about a 1/4 cup for large outside bushes) around the base of geraniums, hydrangeas, or begonias just before you water them to help make the soil more alkaline. Baking soda is good for tomatoes, too. Just sprinkle a couple of teaspoons around each plant.
To kill aphids, spider mites and white flies: mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda to 1/3 cup olive oil. Take 2 teaspoons of this mixture and add it to a cup of water in a spray bottle. Spray your affected plants once a day for a week.
Sweetness Sachet You can make a baking soda sachet with a piece of cloth and a ribbon. Cut out an 8-inch square piece of a tight weave fabric of your choice that will hold the baking soda inside. (For example, lace would be a bad choice because the baking soda would fall right through the holes. If you want to use lace, use it over another, tighter fabric.)
Place the right side (the side you want to show) of the fabric down on a table or counter. With the wrong side of the fabric facing up, place a cup of baking soda in the center. Add bath salts or a few drops of essential oil or perfume for fragrance. Gather up the edges of the fabric, grasping them just above the baking soda, and tie with a ribbon, capturing the baking soda in a “ball”. Tie the ribbon twice and make a bow. You can add more ribbons, tie in silk flowers, beads, or whatever strikes your fancy.
Hang these sachets in closets, or just place one on a counter, bookcase or side table - anywhere you want to add a little freshness to a room.
