The Golden Magic of Honey
|
|
Golden Magic To me, honey is the most magical of all the healing foods because life inside the hive is so mysterious and complex. The bees gather nectar from flowers in the fields, and bring it back to the hive where they perform a complicated dance to tell the other bees where the honey was found. Then the worker bees take the nectar and make a sweet, golden liquid to feed the offspring of their only queen.
Honey is really concentrated nectar. Nectar is a sugary fluid made by plants to attract bees and other insects that spread their pollen so plants can reproduce. Over a million and a half flowers must be visited by busy honeybees to make a single pint of honey.
Bee Pollen Bee pollen is not really made by bees; it is simply pollen that the bees collect by accident from the flowers. Pollen sticks to the bees and is taken off when they return to the hive. The pollen piles up and the beekeeper comes along, sweeps it up and sends it off to the health food industry.
Bee pollen is a miracle food in some respects, for it is the single richest source of vitamins, minerals and enzymes containing complete protein despite being non-meat. If you are a vegetarian, or considering becoming one, bee pollen should be on your menu and used frequently. It has a sweet, almost citrus-like flavor. You can mix the powdered form into juice or chew it as tablets.
I recommend it for allergies, and for anyone recovering from illness, for it speeds healing, decreases stress, and boosts the immune system. It also fights infection, boosts brain power, retards aging, and helps decrease migraine headaches..
Propolis When honeybees construct their hives, they fill all the holes and cracks with a substance they make called propolis. Propolis has been found to increase the effectiveness of bacterial fighters such as penicillin and garlic, sometimes as much as 100%!
Royal Jelly Royal jelly is a special substance secreted by the honeybee and given only to those eggs destined to become queen bees. A study was done in Cairo, Egypt, on the use of royal jelly to increase fertility in men. It was found to increase sperm count as well as sexual performance. You can get it at the health food section.
Beeswax The honeycomb is constructed of beeswax and needs to be filtered out to make the honey clear. The wax makes excellent candles, and is a good lip balm, too.
