Important Tips About Water

Don’t dry out!
Our bodies can become depleted of water from hemorrhaging, excessive sweating, vomiting or diarrhea, or through the use of diuretics.  The signs of dehydration include a dry mouth, decrease in urination, sunken eyes, wrinkled skin, weak pulse, a drop in body temperature, confusion, and low blood pressure.

If you’re not drinking enough water, you may be slightly dehydrated all the time and not realize it.  By the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated.  You can have borderline symptoms, such as never feeling quite right, yet all you need do is increase your water intake.

If you feel you are dehydrated, drink water in small doses, otherwise nausea or vomiting may occur.  Another consideration is the replenishment of electrolytes.  Electrolytes carry electrical charges throughout the fluid of our bodies.  To bring balance back to your system you can mix an electrolyte solution.  For adults, mix 1 pint of water with 1 teaspoon of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of salt (add the juice of 1/2 lemon or lime to mask the taste).  For children, a special electrolyte solution called Pedialyte™ is available at pharmacies.

How much water do you need?
Did you know that you can calculate how much water your body needs?  Your body weight divided by 1/2 equals the number of fluid ounces needed per day.  That means that a man weighing 200 pounds needs 100 ounces of water.  At 8 ounces to a cup, that’s 12 and 1/2 cups, or a little over 3 quarts of water a day.  Even more may be needed if it is hot or you have been exercising and perspiring a lot.

When you’re thirsty, only water will really satisfy your need for fluid.  Other drinks help only to the extent of the amount of actual water they contain.

Be sure your water is pure
If water is so important to our health, doesn’t it make sense to drink the purest water available?  The truth is, water systems aren’t what they used to be.  Many of them were built years ago and are overtaxed and straining at their seams. Unless you can be absolutely sure that no chemicals are leaking through ground water or underground streams from manufacturing companies or factory farming — or even sewers and septic systems — you cannot be sure that the water you drink is pure.

Boiling your tap water for three minutes will kill all bacteria that may be in the water, but will not remove chemical pollutants.  It can also leave water with a flat taste.
